Talks to dissolve Medical Council of India (MCI) has been going on for years. However, now it seems that the time has come when MCI will be replaced by National Medical Commission (NMC). As per the NMC Act, here are few important things that all the students should know about:
- NMC will replace MCI and member of committee will be determined as per draw of lots among nominations sent by state governments, union Territories and State Medical Councils.
- NMC will ensure that NEET is the only entrance examination in India and no other exam is held for admission.
- Fees for 50% seats in all colleges – including private and deemed to be universities – will be regulated by NMC.
- Commission will also conduct National Exit Test (NEXT) after 3 years. It will be a single test after MBBS to (a) qualify MBBS (b) get admission to PG (3) screening test for foreign medical graduates.

How NEET 2020 As Single Entrance Examination Affect You
While some are happy with the decision there are few who find the move to make NEET as only examination absurd. Let us explore how this is good or bad for you.
- NEET as single entrance exam will lead to fair assessment of qualifying candidates. All the students throughout India will appear for one common entrance examination and admissions will be granted on the basis of it only.
- Students will not have to pay application fee for multiple costly application forms and only apply for 1 exam.
- Due to this, transparency can be better maintained. Everyone will know how and on the basis of what admission is being done.
- The sole purpose to abolish MCI was to end corruption and unfair distribution of seats. Admission via single entrance examination will help in ensuring the same.
Demerits of NEET as Single Entrance Examination
- Only one exam for admission means that now students now only have one chance to get admission. It is make it or break it situation.
- Also, though NEET is a single examination but counselling and further admission will be done by multiple bodies, which might need further regulation.
